Hikes and Special Programs with Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods
We offer hikes and programs which can be tailored to your specific needs. All activities are family oriented and children are welcome! Packages range from a few hours to full day activities and clients are encouraged to mix and match when possible according to your interests.
Guided Hikes in Armstrong Redwoods and Austin Creek Reserve
Our Naturalist guided hikes offer many options for various topics, lengths, and experience levels. Focus ranges from redwood ecology, watersheds, birding, wildflower walks, native plants, trees and shrubs, and local history. Distances and elevation gains range from a couple hour stroll on flat ground to a full day strenuous hike.
Short strolls (approximately 2 hours) – A .75 – 1.7 mile easy hike through Armstrong Woods old growth forest. Redwood ecology and watersheds are discussed.
Moderate half day hikes – From 2.2 – 3.3 miles with elevation gains and losses of 500 feet at a time. These hikes encompass redwood ecology and watersheds as well as wildflower, native trees and shrubs viewing and birding opportunities in season.
Strenuous full day hikes – 5.6 – 10 mile loops with 1100 feet elevation changes. Redwood ecology, watersheds, birding, and wildflower and native plant viewing (in season) are all offered as well as back country skills.
History hikes – Take a stroll through Armstrong Woods with Lizzie Armstrong in period dress as she explains the history of the forest and how it came to be a state park. (Easy, under 2 miles.) Or visit the home and studio and learn the story of world renowned Bauhaus potter Marguerite Wildenhain. (Easy – moderate, .5 – 3.5 miles) Natural, cultural, and geological history tours are also offered in various lengths and experience levels.
Adventures are offered year round rain or shine. Occasional cancellations for high winds. Birding adventures are offered in spring and fall.
Wildflower walks and native plant viewings are offered April – September.
Guided Hikes in Sonoma Coast State Park
The hiking options at Sonoma Coast are virtually endless! All Naturalist guided tours can include, in season, birding, tide pooling, whale watching and wildlife, wildflower and native plant viewing and cultural and natural history. Distances and experience levels again vary from 2 hour casual strolls to full day, strenuous hikes.
Short strolls (approximately 2 hours) – The .7 mile stroll to the Seal Nursery at Goat Rock Beach includes seal watching and local history. The 1.7 mile hike around Bodega Head as well as the .75 mile Vista Overlook Trail can incorporate whale watching and birding in season.
Easy to Moderate ½ Day Hikes – The Kortum Trail stretches for 6 miles along the coast offering beautiful views, fabulous birding, whale watching and wildflower and native plant viewing opportunities in season, and access to sandy beaches and tide pools. A half day excursion could include either Blind Beach – Shell Beach a 4.6 mile out and back or Shell Beach to Wrights Beach a 3.2 mile out and back. The Bodega Head overlook hike is a moderate 3 mile hike incorporating the same topics.
Easy to Moderate Full Day Hike – The entire Kortum Trail can be easily done in a day.
Challenging Full Day Hikes - Shell Beach to Pomo Canyon is a 6.6 mile round trip with a 600 ft elevation gain and offers options of wildflower and native plant viewing, birding, and whale watching in season as well as redwood ecology, watersheds, and local history. A tour of the new Willow Creek extension offers several challenging hikes of varying distances covering the topics of local ecology, watersheds, and local history as well as birding and native plant and wildflower viewing in season.
Programs in Sonoma Coast State Park
All programs at Sonoma Coast focus on interaction and education with our amazing variety of marine life. Programs can be either 2 hour activities or half day adventures and can be combined with other activities per the seasons.
Tidepooling - Naturalists teach tidepool etiquette and identification. Get up close and personal with intriguing, yet fragile intertidal marine life! Involves a steep staircase hike to the beach.
Seal Watching - Sonoma County’s largest harbor seal rookery can be viewed at Goat Rock State Beach. Pups are born March through April and are reared through the summer months. Naturalists provide binoculars and scopes for viewing as well as interpretive talks on seal identification, behavior, and the threats facing these gentle creatures. Requires a .7 mile stroll across sandy beach.
Whale Watching – Join Naturalists at Bodega Head for an interpretive talk and viewing of the Pacific Gray Whale migration. Learn about their behavior and migration patterns as well as identifying spouts. Witness nature’s grand events! Binoculars and scopes are provided for viewing. Requires an easy 1 mile stroll.
Whale watching adventures are offered January – May. Seal watching is offered March – September. Birding tours are offered in spring and fall. Wildflower and native plant viewing is offered April – September. Tide pooling adventures are offered spring, summer, and fall at low tides.
All of our booking fees for hikes are based on a 2 person adventure with additional charges per person. Special rates apply for parties of 6 or more.

We will happily provide a Box Lunch (Deli Sandwich, Chips, Cookies, Drink) or Gourmet Picnic (Bread and Cheeses, Gourmet Salad, Fresh Fruit, Drink) at an additional fee. Ask our firstname.lastname@example.org about going rates.
Volunteer for one of our stewardship projects in our state parks! Gain experience, meet fantastic people, and walk away with a sense of satisfaction in knowing you have contributed to the environment while enjoying your vacation. Spend a day or half day working with docents to remove invasive plants, do trail repairs, or clean up our beaches. Packages are offered year round.

In order to ensure confirmation of your adventure, payment must be received 1 week prior to scheduled adventure for 2-10 people 2 weeks prior for 11+ people. Consideration will be given for adventures scheduled less than 2 weeks in advance per availability.
Cancellation Policy: Hikes and Programs
A 10% service fee will be applied to all cancellations. No refunds will be given after the following deadlines
2-4 people No refund unless cancellation received 48 hours before scheduled Adventure
5-10 people No refund unless cancellation received 7 days before scheduled Adventure
11+ people No refund unless cancellation received 14 days before scheduled adventure
Cancellation Policy: Lunches Cancellations received 7 days in advance will be subject to a 10% service charge. No refunds given for cancellations made less than 7 days before scheduled adventure.
